Considering April is Limb Loss Awareness Month, this is the perfect time to educate, provide prevention information and help increase awareness. According to the Amputee Coalition, at least 60% of amputations are preventable. Peripheral Artery Disease (P.A.D.) is a disease in which plaque builds up in the arteries. Over time, the plaque hardens and narrows the arteries. This limits the flow of oxygen-rich blood to your organs and other parts of your body. Blocked blood flow to your legs can cause numbness and severe pain in your legs and feet. It can raise your risk of getting an infection, especially if there is an open sore. P.A.D. can ultimately lead to gangrene and leg amputations.
